World’s Largest Turkey – Frazee, Minnesota
Otter Tail County, located in northwestern Minnesota, is a hot spot for giant roadside sculpture. With over a 1000 lakes, it’s also a popular spot for fishing, boating, and family fun! On our last visit to Otter Tail County, I shared with you the story of Otto the Otter in Fergus Falls. You can learn about Otto and the many other attractions of Fergus Falls by clicking here. Located just off Highway 10, the small town of Frazee welcomes visitors to stop and rest while exploring the lake country. It is here that we find our next giant, the World’s Largest Turkey, “Big Tom.”
In 1986, local Frazee turkey growers made a giant turkey sculpture from metal, fiberglass, and cardboard. Named “Big Tom,” the sculpture quickly fell into disrepair and a new fiberglass turkey was ordered from D.W.O. Fiberglass of Sparta, Wisconsin. While taking the old “Big Tom” down, it caught fire and blew up in flames. Luckily, the new “Big Tom” arrived a month after the fire. It stands 20 feet tall and 17 feet wide, and it weighs more than 5,000 pounds! Big Tom can be found on Highway 87 at Lions Park, which also has a nice playground.
A second turkey sculpture stands in the middle of Frazee on East Main Avenue.
