Bemidji’s Paul Bunyan and Babe
Perhaps the most famous sculptures in all of Minnesota, Paul Bunyan and Babe attract thousands of visitors every year to far northern Minnesota. Bemidji offers loads of family fun with opportunities to learn about science, history, culture, and more!
In 1937, the city of Bemidji created the giant sculptures of Paul Bunyan and Babe for their winter carnival celebration. At 18 feet tall and weighing 2.5 tons, Paul stands on the shore of Lake Bemidji, which is said to be his birthplace. Babe weighs five tons and is 23 feet long. Originally, a cart carried Babe around as he toured Minnesota and the United States to promote Bemidji tourism. He also had special pipes in his nose that blew smoke out his nostrils! Look for him and Paul next to the Bemidji Chamber of Commerce at 3rd Street and Bemidji Avenue.
Inside the Chamber of Commerce building you will find the Fireplace of the States. Built in 1934-1935 as part of the U.S. Federal Works Program, the fireplace is made out of stones from every American state and each Canadian province. Other giant things belonging to Paul Bunyan, like his giant gun and axe, decorate the inside of the chamber building.
**It is important to note that the parking lot and area around the Paul Bunyan and Babe sculpture is under construction (July/August 2015) to renovate the park. An all-inclusive playground area is also planned for construction. The chamber office is open during the construction.
